Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

It usually comes down to one of two problems: Google is not showing your Business Profile at all, or it is showing it but not for the searches you care about. They have different causes, so it helps to work out which one you have first.

Step one: search for your exact business name.

Search Google Maps for your business name and town. If your business does not appear even for its own name, the problem is the profile itself. If it appears for its name but not for searches like the service you offer, the problem is ranking, which is covered further down.

If your business does not appear at all

No profile or not verified

Your business needs a Google Business Profile, and Google generally needs to verify it before it shows on Maps. A profile that was started but never verified may not appear.

Suspended or under review

Google can suspend or limit a profile it believes breaks its guidelines, or hold it for review after edits. Signing in to the profile usually shows a notice if this has happened.

Duplicate or wrong details

Two profiles for one business, or a name, address or category that does not match the real business, can cause the wrong listing to show or none at all.

If it appears for your name but not for your services

Google describes local results as based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher or the location in the search. Prominence is how well known the business is, which Google says includes information from across the web, such as links, articles and reviews.

You cannot change where a customer is searching from, but you can improve relevance and prominence: an accurate primary category, a complete profile, a website that clearly explains each service and area, and steady genuine reviews.
